Abstract

Mobile Cloud Computing enables mobile devices to augment constrained resources such as processing, storage, and battery autonomy by using the cloud infrastructure. As the network is a key element in integrating mobile devices to the cloud, a proper management of the mobile cloud computing environment is necessary. Such a management must take into account two main perspectives: administrator’s and end-user’s perspectives. The administrator is usually concerned with a more objective perspective based on Quality of Service parameters, such as throughput, delay, and jitter. On the other hand, the end-user has a more subjective perspective, observing his/her Quality of Experience when using a mobile cloud application or service. In this article, we introduce a management model and architecture for mobile cloud computing, exploiting both objective and subjective perspectives. As a proof of concept, we prototyped the architecture in a management system called CoLisEU, which allowed us to investigate this architecture and we discuss the benefits of the combined objective and subjective perspectives in our management architecture.

Abstract

Mobile applications are increasingly exploiting cloud computing to overcome the resource limitations of mobile devices. To this end, the most computationally expensive tasks are offloaded to the cloud and the mobile application simply interacts with a remote service through a network connection. One way to establish such a connection is given by remote display access, in which a mobile device just operates as a thin client by relaying the input events to a server and updating the screen based on the content received. In this article, we specifically address remote display access as a means for mobile cloud computing, with focus on its power consumption at mobile devices. Different from most of the existing literature, we take an experimental approach based on real user sessions employing different remote access protocols and types of applications, including gaming. Through several experiments, we characterize the impact of the different protocols and their features on power consumption and network utilization. We conclude our analysis with considerations on usability and user experience.

Abstract

Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is gaining popularity due to anywhere anytime data access. However, at the same time it also introduces the new privacy and security threats that have become an obstacle to the widespread use and popularity of MCC. In this paper, we propose a reliable recommendation and privacy preserving based cross-layer reputation mechanism (RP-CRM) to provide secure and privacy-aware communication process in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) based MCC (WM-MCC). RP-CRM integrates the cross-layer design with recommendation reputation reliability evaluation mechanism and the privacy preserving scheme to identify and manage the internal malicious nodes and protect the security and privacy against internal multi-layer attack, bad mouthing attack and information disclosure attack. Simulation results and performance analysis demonstrate that RP-CRM can provide rapid and accurate malicious node identification and management, and provide security and privacy protection against aforementioned attacks more effectively and efficiently.
