Abstract

Mobile applications are increasingly exploiting cloud computing to overcome the resource limitations of mobile devices. To this end, the most computationally expensive tasks are offloaded to the cloud and the mobile application simply interacts with a remote service through a network connection. One way to establish such a connection is given by remote display access, in which a mobile device just operates as a thin client by relaying the input events to a server and updating the screen based on the content received. In this article, we specifically address remote display access as a means for mobile cloud computing, with focus on its power consumption at mobile devices. Different from most of the existing literature, we take an experimental approach based on real user sessions employing different remote access protocols and types of applications, including gaming. Through several experiments, we characterize the impact of the different protocols and their features on power consumption and network utilization. We conclude our analysis with considerations on usability and user experience.

Abstract

Cloud computing has emerged as an important ICT (information and communication technology) innovation that could potentially revolutionize the way computing resources are consumed and provided. In emerging economies, such innovation is regarded as the new way to provide information infrastructure that has the potential for further economic upgrading. In this paper, we investigate the initiation and growth process of the cloud computing industry in China, based on an in-depth case study. We discover that the development of China׳s cloud computing industry that emerged from an initial concept involves the co-evolution of technological and institutional infrastructure leading to a preliminary cloud ecosystem. We also find that such a process involves a wide range of different actors, from the government side to the business side, the interaction among which, in pursuing their own interests, drive the development of the cloud computing industry into being. Finally, situated in the institutional context of China, the government–business relationship is witnessed to have changed and evolved along development of such an emerging industry, demonstrating the important and unique roles of both sides in industrial (or even national) wide diffusion of the ICT innovation.

Abstract

Cloud computing has emerged as a popular computing paradigm for hosting large computing systems and services. Recently, significant research is carried out on Resource Management (RM) techniques that focus on the efficient sharing of cloud resources among multiple users. RM techniques in cloud are designed for computing and workload intensive applications that have different optimization parameters. This study presents a comprehensive review of RM techniques and elaborates their extensive taxonomy based on the distinct features. It highlights evaluation parameters and platforms that are used to evaluate RM techniques. Moreover, it presents design goals and research challenges that should be considered while proposing novel RM techniques.
